Amnesty International, in its newly released annual report, announced that the Islamic Republic recorded at least 2,159 executions in 2025, marking the highest recorded number of executions globally. The figure is described as more than double the number recorded in 2024.
The report, published on Monday, May 18, states that a total of 2,707 individuals were executed across 17 countries worldwide during the past calendar year. This figure represents the highest recorded global toll since 1981.
Amnesty International declared that the vast majority of the global surge in executions stems from the implementation of death sentences by the Islamic Republic in Iran, with the Iranian regime single-handedly driving the “primary share of this statistical spike.”
Following Iran, Saudi Arabia ranked second with at least 356 executions, and Yemen ranked third with 51 executions. The organization also reported a rise in the number of executions in countries including the United States, Egypt, Kuwait, and Singapore.
In a section of its report, Amnesty International warned that many of the executions in Iran were carried out following trials that fell far short of international standards for a fair trial. The organization also raised alarms over the Islamic Republic’s use of capital punishment to suppress dissent and create an environment of fear.
