The Government of Ghana has announced plans to evacuate its citizens from South Africa, with the first batch of 300 Ghanaians scheduled to return on May 21, 2026, amid rising concerns over their welfare and safety.

Authorities in Accra confirmed that the evacuation exercise forms part of emergency diplomatic measures aimed at protecting nationals affected by ongoing security and socio-economic tensions in South Africa.

Officials said the operation is being coordinated by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with relevant South African authorities and international partners to ensure a safe and orderly return process.

The government stressed that the protection of its citizens abroad remains a top priority under the administration of President John Mahama.
