MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine National Police (PNP) is on alert for possible protests as the Senate convenes as an impeachment court for the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday, May 18.

“We expect high emotions from the supporters and this is the part when police presence is needed to maintain peace and order,” PNP chief Gen. Jose Melencio Nartatez Jr. said in a statement.

“The Philippine National Police… [has] placed Metro Manila and key regional units on alert ahead of possible protest actions and other activities linked to the opening of Senate impeachment court proceedings,” he noted.
