Changing veterinary protocols is ultimately a political choice, EFSA experts say

EU farmers and policymakers want to shift away from mandatory culling during animal disease outbreaks, but experts say turning to vaccines is no easy fix.

The highly contagious lumpy skin disease (LSD), which infects cattle, reappeared in the EU last year after almost a decade, triggering strict veterinary measures and even protests in France and Spain.

Classified as a “Category A” disease under EU rules – the most serious tier reserved for exotic diseases that must be eradicated immediately – outbreaks require culling entire herds after a single confirmed case.
