The Kankanady Town Police on Saturday, May 16, rescued 27 buffaloes that were allegedly being illegally transported from Haveri district to Taliparamba in Kannur district of neighbouring State Kerala and have arrested four persons.Personnel on highway patrol and morning patrol intercepted a truck carrying the animals in Jeppinamogaru at around 6 a.m. and found the buffaloes being transported in a cruel manner.The police gave the names of the accused as Syed Mehaboob Ali, 28, resident of Bommanakatte, Shivamogga, Sunil Lakshmappa Javali, 24, from Adavi Nittur, Hirekerur-Haveri, Arun Chandrappa Javali, 46, and Hiriyanna Gowda, 46, both residents of Madevarahalli, Arsikere-Hassan.The police have registered a case under the provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Act, 2020. The accused were produced before the jurisdictional court, which remanded them in judicial custody, while the buffaloes were sent to a goshala.Calf rescuedThe Moodbidri police on Thursday rescued a calf that was being transported in a multi-utility vehicle and arrested two persons.The police tried to intercept the vehicle on Thursday morning at Padumarnadu; however, the vehicle did not stop and was driven to the residence of one Sahul Hamid. They caught hold of habitual offender Mohammed Arief of Handelu and his accomplice Imran alias Ibrahim of Gantalkatte. On examination of the vehicle, the police found the calf on the rear seat.The accused told the police that they had been stealing cattle from neighbouring locations for the past week and were slaughtering them in Hamid’s house to sell beef.The Moodbidri police have registered a case and investigation is under way.
