Greek Eurovision buffs hold up their country’s flag in downtown Vienna, as the Austrian capital welcomes thousands of fans from around the world for the Eurovision Song Contest final on Saturday night, where Greece is being represented by Akylas and his rap-pop ode to his hardworking mother, “Ferto” (Bring It).
Vienna’s historic cafes have also been swept up by the party vibe, setting up Eurofan Cafes, an institution first established when Athens hosted the event in 2006. Each cafe plays host to the fans of a particular competing nation, sometimes serving drinks and snacks inspired by their respective cuisines.
Greek and Armenian fans are being hosted by the Frauenhuber cafe, one of the city’s oldest, if not the oldest. “Akylas is going to bring it – for sure. Don’t mind the Finns; the bookies mean nothing,” two Greek fans are heard saying as they leave the cafe.
