According to the statement, “Religious and tribal sentiments should not be used as major considerations in determining who emerges as candidates for elective offices within the party.”
A concerned Christian group within the All Progressives Congress (APC) has called on stakeholders of the party across Kwara State to prioritise competence, credibility, popularity and leadership capacity in the selection of candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections, especially for National Assembly positions.
The group, which spoke under the platform of Concerned Christian Group in APC, warned against allowing religious and tribal sentiments to determine who emerges as candidates for elective offices within the ruling party.
In a statement signed by its coordinator, Emmanuel Peters, the group said Nigeria remains a secular state where leadership and political representation should be based on merit, performance and the capacity to deliver effective governance and quality representation to the people.
The group maintained that the APC would stand a stronger chance of retaining its political dominance in Kwara State if candidates are selected based on grassroots acceptability, political experience, competence and their ability to mobilise support across religious and ethnic lines.
