MIT President Sally Kornbluth acknowledged on Thursday that the Institute is facing a “striking loss” in research funding and is also likely to see a dramatic drop in graduate student enrollment.

Kornbluth delivered the sobering news in a video message, in which she pointed to large reductions in federal funding, an increased tax — now at 8% — on the institution’s endowment, and the Trump administration’s restrictive immigration policies as the major factors contributing to MIT’s growing financial challenges.

According to Kornbluth, compared to last year, the Institute has seen a more than 20% decline in campus research funded by federal awards. In addition, the number of new federal research grants awarded to MIT investigators is also down more than 20%.
