The distance recorded in the tourism performance of Athens compared to Barcelona is not just numerical data, but the result of a profound difference in the organization and management of the destination, with the Catalan region recording 34.6 million overnight stays per year compared to just 12.7 million in Greater Athens.
This picture is clear in the research by GBR Consulting, carried out on behalf of the Athens – Attica & Argosaronic Hotel Association, which demonstrates that Barcelona has managed to function as a tourism engine that spreads demand throughout its territory, while Athens is trapped in a model of intense concentration in its historic center.
