CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has ordered Jesuit-run Xavier University-Ateneo de Cagayan (XU) and its development partner, Cebu Landmasters Inc. (CLI), to explain its ongoing commercial development on a 64-hectare property in the city’s uptown area.

In a May 11 order signed by community environment and natural resources officer Jerome Pioquinto, XU and CLI were given 15 days to submit a written explanation and supporting documents justifying the legality of converting portions of the property into commercial and residential development.

The investigation comes on the heels of a petition filed by lawyer Ralph Metrillo, on behalf of several residents, seeking the confiscation and forfeiture of the entire property for alleged violation of its 1958 land award.FEATURED STORIES
