“In principle” was a significant phrase included throughout last Friday’s FIA announcement that Formula 1 engine hardware is now likely to change for the 2027 season. While this development has gained significant political momentum from the championship’s key stakeholders to become a reality, there is still much more to be agreed upon around it.

Until it is all settled, the proposal remains just that. And there will be plenty of political maneuvering around it playing out in the coming weeks, as the truncated 2026 season finally starts rolling once again.
