The EU executive warned a binding law could take years
The European Commission has pledged to adopt a recommendation calling on EU countries to ban so-called conversion practices – a response that falls short of demands made under the European Citizens’ Initiative on the issue, which had called for a binding legislative proposal.
“Today, we commit to adopting a recommendation to member states, urging them to ban conversion practices throughout the EU. They have no place in our Union,” European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said.
According to a report by the EU Agency for Fundamental Rights, 24% of LGBTQI+ people have been subjected to practices aimed at changing, suppressing, or erasing their sexual orientation or gender identity.
