Abdul Qahar Balkhi currently serves as spokesman of Afghanistan’s foreign ministry

Abdul Qahar Balkhi, the Taliban’s foreign affairs spokesman, is expected to lead a delegation to Brussels in June for talks on migration, according to EU officials.

The European Commission confirmed on Tuesday it had sent an invitation letter to the “de-facto” authorities of Afghanistan, confirming Euractiv’s reporting last month that preparations for the visit were underway.

Balkhi, one of the Taliban’s most internationally engaged officials, currently serves as the head of communications at Afghanistan’s foreign ministry. He has frequently acted as the public face and defender of the Taliban since the Islamists returned to power in 2021, engaging with foreign media and international interlocutors on issues ranging from sanctions to migration and humanitarian assistance.
