A University of Genoa professor was among the five Italian tourists who died on a dive in the Maldives Thursday, local sources said.

Monica Montefalcone, an associate professor of Ecology at the University of Genoa, a well-known TV personality, a researcher, and a marine environment expert, was one of the people who disappeared during a dive near Alimathaa, in the Maldives.

The University of Genoa confirmed the news.

The professor was known for her great love of the sea and for being responsible for several important marine projects such as Talassa, GhostNet, and MER "A16-A18."
