Democracy Dies in DarknessReaders on feminism, foreign policy and more.May 13, 2026 at 3:10 p.m. EDTYesterday at 3:10 p.m. EDTPresident Donald Trump and first lady Melania Trump at the White House on April 28. (Jacquelyn Martin/AP)Regarding Melania Trump’s May 10 Sunday Opinion essay, “Mothers are America’s strength”:The first lady’s claim that feminism made women put career over family, to the nation’s detriment, misconstrued what feminism means. Feminism is about the ability for a woman to choose motherhood over career, career over motherhood, neither or anything in between. Likewise, feminism shapes a stronger America because it advocates the ability to choose motherhood over a career. That is a choice that could not be made without feminism. Thus, feminism does not harm our country. It promotes liberty and equality.
