First lady Melania Trump befuddled both critics and admirers over the timing of a news conference at the White House last week, where she denied any involvement with Jeffrey Epstein, seemingly seeking to distance herself from the convicted sex offender.

"The individuals lying about me are devoid of ethical standards, humility and respect," a stone-faced Trump said, standing behind the lectern. The cable news networks – from Fox to CNN – held court over why she chose to address the press about Epstein on April 9, when the Iran war had largely bumped mentions of the late financier out of the news cycle.

Trump operates on her own time and has long opted for a public and personal life of her own choosing. But the wife of Donald Trump, who often avoids the spotlight she might face by weighing in on her husband's policy decisions, has become increasingly involved in the presidency in recent months.

Melania Trump denied Epstein ties. She may still have to testify, eventually.

On Wednesday, April 15, Trump will attend a roundtable discussion on Capitol Hill with members of the House Ways and Means Committee to trumpet a package of bills intended to advance her foster care initiative.
