May 8 (Asia Today) -- This commentary is the Asia Today Editor's Op-Ed.
A Korean proverb warns that "a small crack can sink a ship." That phrase may now apply to the future of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries after the United Arab Emirates announced last week that it would leave both OPEC and the broader OPEC+ alliance.
The UAE's withdrawal is being viewed as one of the most significant shocks in OPEC's history. The Gulf state had remained a member for nearly six decades, and its sudden departure has raised fresh doubts about the cartel's unity, credibility and ability to influence global oil prices.
The move also reflects deepening tensions between the UAE and Saudi Arabia, the group's de facto leader.
