The European Union's Stability and Growth Pact waivers for defence spending should be extended to energy spending amid the Iran war, Economy Minister Giancarlo Giorgetti told the Eurogroup Monday.
In his speech to the Eurogroup meeting, Giorgetti highlighted as an "option" that of "extending, while leaving the existing ceiling unchanged, the application of the national safeguard clause" for the waiver from the Stability Pact "for defense purposes in the Iranian crisis with regard to the negative consequences for the energy sector, invoking the national security concerns already envisaged in the Temporary Framework approved last week by the EU Commission."
