The Unorganised Workers’ Federation on Friday demanded the withdrawal of the four labour codes, the allocation of 3% of government budgets for the social security of informal workers, and the expansion of welfare measures, at a May Day meeting held near the Labour Statue here.

The federation — which comprises trade unions representing workers across the unorganised sector — called for the protection of workers’ rights, strengthening of welfare boards, and expansion of social security measures.

It also sought the restoration of earlier protections under existing labour laws and stronger implementation of welfare schemes for unorganised workers, including construction workers, fishermen, agricultural labourers, and artisans.

It urged the government to introduce sector-specific welfare cess and regulate the prices of essential commodities and construction materials.

The federation further called for improved healthcare access through ESI (Employees’ State Insurance), enhanced compensation for workplace accidents, maternity benefits, pension schemes, and educational assistance for workers’ families.
