Expectations among unorganised and gig workers in Tiruchi are increasingly centred on economic security, welfare measures, and dignity at work. From food delivery partners and ride-hailing drivers to daily-wage labourers and small service providers, the segment of the city’s electorate now depends on uncertain, demand-driven incomes.A key demand cutting across the workforce is access to comprehensive welfare measures. “We don’t have any safety net. If I meet with an accident, there is no guarantee my family will be supported. We need proper health insurance, accident cover, and some form of pension,” said Prakash, a food delivery partner.Workers also point out that existing schemes are either inadequate or difficult to access. Many say they are unaware of eligibility criteria or struggle with documentation barriers.Unorganised workers, including construction labourers, domestic workers, and street vendors, echo similar concerns. “There is no fixed income. Some days we earn, some days we don’t. At least minimum wage enforcement and some job security would help us plan our lives better,” said M. Renuka, a domestic worker. Many gig workers report fluctuating incomes influenced by algorithm-based incentives, rising fuel and LPG costs, and platform commissions. “Earlier, incentives were better. Now, even after working 12 hours, earnings are unpredictable. The increasing cost of essentials adds to the woes,” said Karthik, a ride-hailing driver. As elections approach, many workers say their vote will depend less on party loyalty and more on tangible commitments. “We are not looking for promises, but practical solutions. Policies are made, but they rarely reach us,” Mr. Karthik added.“We are looking for a change, not just in words, but in how our work and lives are valued,” Mr. Prakash said.
