As the State continues to sizzle under rising temperatures, the School Education Department has issued an advisory for principals, teachers, support staff, and students to protect themselves from summer heat.

In a circular, the department said that open spaces exposed to direct sunlight during peak hours, especially during 12.00 p.m. and 3.00 p.m., must be avoided. “Classes, games, or exercise for students outside during these hours must be avoided,” they said.

Stating that awareness must be raised, they further said that students should be told about the need to drink adequate amounts of water. “Students should be provided with opportunities to drink water at the beginning of each lesson and also be encouraged to carry water while travelling,” said Director of School Education S. Kannappan.

Pointing out that indoor games can be played, he also noted that students are advised to use umbrellas when going out in the sun. The circular also added that bringing ORS, homemade lemon juice, buttermilk, and lassi should also be encouraged.

“School must be adequately stocked with ORS packets and first aid kits ready. Activities such as planting and maintaining trees in the school premises should be encouraged. Additionally, water containers for birds can also be placed in shade,” he added.
