With temperatures soaring across Punjab and prolonged electricity cuts affecting key cities, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government on Monday (April 27, 2026) claimed that it has moved swiftly to ensure an uninterrupted power supply, even as Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) blamed the government for ‘the complete failure that has left ordinary people struggling’.

Senior SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema said, “The AAP government was directly responsible for the eight-ten hour power cuts in the State, as it failed to make short-term power purchases, execute timely power exchange agreements with hill states and engage in immediate power trading due to an acute shortage of funds. It is a clear case of mismanagement.”

Mr. Cheema said the AAP government had failed to prevail upon the Punjab State Power Corporation (PSPCL) to do short-term power purchases even when there was sufficient prior warning that the summer season would start early. “Even power exchange agreements with the hill States, which result in the release of power from the hill States of Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh to Punjab in the summer months, were delayed. The government had failed to undertake power trading immediately as it was short of funds, as a result, people in both the rural and urban areas are suffering,” he said in a statement.
