A 27-year-old man has been arrested for allegedly murdering his father by strangulation after a drunken altercation at their home in Vandalur.

The victim, Perumal, 51, a roadside vendor selling ready-made garments in Otteri Extension, is survived by his wife, his son Ajith Kumar, and a married daughter. The police said Ajith Kumar, 27, who is currently unemployed, came home in an inebriated state.

A heated argument broke out when Perumal questioned him, during which Ajith is said to have strangled his father with a towel. He subsequently phoned his mother, who was staying at their daughter’s residence in Maduravoyal, stating that Perumal had suddenly collapsed. However, a 108 ambulance team that reached the house declared him dead and grew suspicious of foul play.

Personnel from the Vandalur Otteri police station arrived at the scene, and during interrogation, Ajith Kumar admitted to the crime. He was taken into custody, charged under relevant provisions of the BNS Act, and sent to Puzhal prison on Friday.
