The Janata Dal (United) on Monday authorised its national president Nitish Kumar to select the new legislature party leader following his resignation as Chief Minister of Bihar. The decision was unanimously taken during the meeting, in the presence of Mr. Kumar.

Following the meeting held at 1, Anne Marg, JD(U) chief spokesperson and MLC Neeraj Kumar said, “National president Nitish Kumar ji has been authorised to select the leader of the Legislature Party. The Legislature Party unanimously empowered him to undertake this task.”

Apart from his parliamentary duties, Mr. Kumar would be touring various regions of Bihar along with party leaders to get updated on the party’s activities and the government’s work, the party spokesperson said.

Since Mr. Kumar’s resignation as Chief Minister on April 14, the party post has been vacant. Senior leader Vijay Kumar Choudhary, currently one of two Deputy Chief Ministers from the JD(U), could be elected the legislature party leader. Mr. Choudhary, 69, a seven-term MLA from Sarairanjan constituency in Samastipur district, is a close aide of the party chief.
