Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, who heads the JD(U) and became a Rajya Sabha MP last week, tendered his resignation on Tuesday (April 14, 2026), after the Cabinet meeting.

The BJP, which is the single largest party in the 243-strong Assembly, with 89 MLAs, will thereafter elect its legislature party leader. For the first time, the BJP is going to have a Chief Minister in the State. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the new government on April 15 at Lok Bhawan.

Senior JD(U) leaders Sanjay Jha and Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary met Mr. Kumar at his official residence ahead of the Cabinet meeting.

Mr. Kumar on April 10, 2026, took oath as a member of Rajya Sabha, marking an end to his two-decade stint in office and paving the way for a new Chief Minister.
