Janata Dal (United)’s Nitish Kumar is likely to step down as the Chief Minister of Bihar today (April 14, 2026), amid hectic political developments in the State. Earlier in the day, Mr. Kumar held his last-ever State Cabinet meeting. He informed his Cabinet colleagues about his decision to dissolve the Council of Ministers, a constitutional requirement before tendering his resignation.

Mr. Kumar, who has been Chief Minister for the past 21 years, is likely to address the party legislature meeting and then the NDA legislature meeting, where the name of the new leader will be announced. For the first time, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is going to have a Chief Minister in the State. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is likely to attend the oath-taking ceremony of the new government on April 15 at Lok Bhawan.
