Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar was elected as the national president of the Janata Dal (United) for the fourth time on Tuesday (March 24, 2026), ahead of his planned shift to Delhi as a newly elected Rajya Sabha MP.Mr. Kumar was the only candidate to file his nomination for the party chief’s position, so returning officer and former Rajya Sabha MP Aneel Prasad Hegde issued the certificate after the last date to withdraw nominations.As the CM was busy reviewing development work in Rohtas and Kaimur district, where he inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for projects worth ₹689 crore, as part of the Samriddhi Yatra, the certificate was recieved on his behalf at the party office in New Delhi by .JD(U) working president and Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Jha, Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, Bihar Minister Sharwan Kumar and other party leaders.Mr. Kumar became the party’s national president for the first time in April 2016, succeeding the late Sharad Yadav. In December 2020, he handed over the responsibility to R.C.P. Singh, who was replaced by Mr. Lalan Singh in July 2021. In December 2023, Mr. Singh stepped down from the post, months ahead of the Lok Sabha election, after which Mr. Kumar was unanimously elected as the president of the JD(U).
