Getty ImagesKey FactsTrump targeted former Fox News hosts-turned-podcasters Megyn Kelly and Tucker Carlson in a Truth Social post Friday, as well as conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and conservative podcaster Candace Owens. He hit his former supporters with a wide variety of insults—from calling them "Really Dumb and mentally ill" to “completely ‘fried’”—and shared a link to an article referencing a recent CNN poll that showed Trump has a higher favorability rating among Republicans than Carlson. “It’s easy! Tucker is a Low IQ person - Always easy to beat, and highly overrated!!!,” Trump posted. Trump's most recent attack on his one-time allies comes as a majority of the conservative podcasters who helped push him to victory in 2024 turn against him, a sign of a once-united MAGA movement that is fracturing under some of the Trump administration's recent controversies. Carlson has been among the most vocal opponents of the Iran war on the right, calling Trump's threats against the Iranian people "vile on every level,” and Jones also broke with Trump over the war, recently claiming the president is under “demonic influences.” Theo Von, who hosted Trump in an overtly friendly interview during his 2024 campaign, recently called the Trump administration “f***ing terrorists." Owens split with Trump soon after his election and has been extremely critical since, recently calling him “satanic” in the context of the Iran War. Kelly said on a recent episode of her online show that she was "sick of (Trump's) s**t" and asked, "Can’t he just behave like a normal human?" Joe Rogan, who has one of the most-listened-to podcasts in America and hosted an extremely influential podcast with Trump just ahead of the election, has said the president’s recent actions make those who supported him feel “betrayed” and has openly ridiculed Trump’s behavior, including a recent image he posted depicting himself as Jesus. What Else Has Trump Said? Trump first turned on his former allies in a Truth Social post last week, in which he attacked the same four people as “NUT JOBS” and “TROUBLEMAKERS” before mocking their careers. He said their commentary against him has been a bid to gain “cheap publicity” for their podcasts and said he could “get them on my side” whenever he wants. He specifically targeted Owens over her unsubstantiated conspiracy theory that the French First Lady Brigitte Macron was born a man, and attacked Jones for his conspiracy theory claiming the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting was a "hoax." Trump said Jones “lost his entire fortune, as he should have, for his horrendous attack on the families of the Sandy Hook shooting victims." Key BackgroundThe change of tune among prominent MAGA voices represents a deeper divide in the conservative base that has been growing over the past several months—and not just because of the Iran war. Many criticized the Trump administration's handling of the Epstein files, in which Trump is mentioned hundreds of thousands of times. Former Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, once a die-hard Trump supporter, fell out with the president over the release of the Epstein files and ultimately resigned her seat in Congress. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky) has accused Trump's Justice Department of not fully complying with the law and other Republican lawmakers, including House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.), have also expressed concern. Religious conservatives have expressed their discontent with Trump this month since Easter, when he posted an expletive-laden rant against Iranian leaders and said they'd be "living in Hell" if they didn't re-open the Strait of Hormuz. The next week, on Orthodox Easter, he directly attacked Pope Leo XIV and posted a photo of himself depicted as Jesus descending from the heavens to heal a sick man, which was condemned as “OUTRAGEOUS blasphemy.” He later deleted the image, but did not apologize, nor has he walked back his criticism of the Pope.
