The last four governors of Sicily are among 13 people who have been placed under investigation over a dramatic landslide that hit the Sicilian town of Niscemi in January, judicial sources said Wednesday.
Centre-right officials Raffaele Lombardo, Rosario Crocetta, Nello Musumeci (current Minister for Civil Protection and Sea Policies) and Renato Schifani are being probed on suspicion of culpable negligence, the sources said.
The massive landslide in the town near Caltanissetta swept homes and vehicles down the valley, leaving dozens of buildings hanging in the air.
Approximately 1,500 people were displaced.
Lombardo, 76, served from 2008 to 2012; Crocetta, 75, from 2012 to 2017; Musumeci, 71, from 2017 until 2022; and incumbent Schifani, 75, from 2022 until the present.
