The death toll in Tuesday’s (April 14, 2026) boiler tube explosion in a Power Plant in Chhattisgarh’s Sakti district climbed to 16 on Wednesday (April 15) even as 18 others are undergoing treatment, said a senior police officer.
While four victims died on the spot, others succumbed to their injuries soon after the incident, the officer said. Two more workers have died, raising the toll to 16.
The blast occurred at Vedanta’s Singhitarai power plant on Tuesday (April 14) afternoon when the tube that connects the boiler to the turbine exploded injuring the workers, some of whom were taking their lunch, officials said.
The Opposition Congress meanwhile has demanded registration of an FIR against the plant management and a judicial inquiry into the incident. The party also demanded higher compensation amounts for the deceased and the injured.
Party spokesperson Sushil Anand Shukla alleged negligence on the plant management's part and accused the government of attempting to shield those responsible. He also demanded compensation of ₹1 crore for the families of the deceased and ₹50 lakh for the injured.
