Samrat Choudhary took the oath of office on Wednesday (April 15, 2026), to become the first Chief Minister of Bihar from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Bihar Governor Syed Ata Hasnain administered the oath of office to Mr. Choudhary at the Lok Bhawan in Patna.

JD(U) leaders Vijay Kumar Choudhary and Bijendra Prasad Yadav also took oath as Ministers. Both the JD(U) leaders will assume charge as Deputy CMs.

Mr. Samrat Choudhary was elected as the leader of the BJP and NDA Legislature Parties on Tuesday (April 14, 2026), following days of suspense and speculation, and an hour after Nitish Kumar officially resigned as Bihar’s longest serving Chief Minister. Mr. Kumar, the leader of the JD (U), became a Rajya Sabha MP last week.
