Bihar gets its first BJP-led government after Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary is set to become the State’s new Chief Minister on Tuesday (April 14, 2026). The appointment follows Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s resignation after he was elected as a Rajya Sabha member last week.

Mr. Choudhary was elected as the BJP’s Legislature Party leader, following a meeting of the party’s MLAs. The BJP finished as the single largest party with 89 seats after the 2025 Assembly elections in the State.

Mr. Choudhury, and several JD(U) leaders, including Sanjay Jha and Rajiv Ranjan Singh alias Lalan Singh, met Mr. Kumar at his official residence. The leaders paid their respects to Babasaheb B.R. Ambedkar near Patna High Court.

On Friday (April 10, 2026), Mr. Kumar took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha, marking an end to his two-decade stint in Bihar’s top office.
