In a bend of the Red River, about 40 kilometers south of Hanoi, the graves began to move before the people did. In this small cemetery in the middle of the fields, toppled tombs marked with white crosses lay haphazardly under the drizzle. The rice paddies held firm – for now. "Some have already moved their dead," said Hoang Anh Sa, a farmer in his fifties from a nearby village.

The reason for this early relocation? A Trump Organization golf course is to be established, precisely at this spot. Approved just before the US presidential election in late 2024, the project was fast-tracked by Vietnam's highest authorities in hopes of securing the best possible trade deal with the United States. The communist country is the trading partner with which the US has its third-largest deficit.
