I’ve been a massive Belieber since day one — yes, I’ve unironically loved all of his albums since the legendary “One Time” music video came out in 2009 (a defining moment in our culture). So when it was announced that Justin Bieber would be headlining Coachella this year, I was SEATED.Kevin Mazur / Getty ImagesEven if you’re not a long-time Justin Bieber fan, you know he’s got a killer voice. It could wake me up from the dead. It’s so distinct and unique, I’d recognize it in an instant. It’s heaven. Okay, you get the point. So really, anything Bieber sang was bound to sound amazing.Kevin Mazur / Getty ImagesBut there are other things that matter just as much, if not more than the way a song sounds at a music festival. That includes the setlist choices (especially when you’ve got a catalogue as iconic as Justin Bieber), stage presence, set design, and performance visuals.Kevin Mazur / Getty ImagesAnd so, as a huge pop culture fan and critic, I had to watch Bieber’s set with fresh eyes. Before his performance, I witnessed millions of 20-something fans on the internet aching to hear him give the stage his all, and really lean into his past music (dare I say, “Eras Tour”-style). And my expectations were high given his reported paycheque of a whopping $10 million.Kevin Mazur / Getty ImagesBut that... wasn’t the case. Although Bieber’s voice obviously sounded as angelic as it always does, virtually all the songs he played were new, and the only OG classics he “sang” were featured as a mix of YouTube clips playing on the screen.I’m an avid enjoyer of “SWAG” and “SWAG II,” but the quality of those performances felt a bit lacklustre to me, too. Perhaps that’s just because part of my brain was comparing Bieber’s more low-key performance style to Sabrina Carpenter’s electric, all-out, Broadway-level show the night before...Kevin Mazur / Getty ImagesAnd it turns out, the internet appears to be in agreement. Specifically, a lot of people are pointing out the “double-standard” that exists in the music industry, where male performers have a noticeably lower bar than women do. And regardless of how you feel about Justin Bieber, you can’t deny they have a POINT.Kevin Mazur / Getty Images / CoachellaSo here’s what people said:Note: There are no reports at the moment that Bieber is the highest-ever paid performer...but he still obviously got paid a ton.But it’s not all hate. Some people are saying they loved the performance, and giving some reasons as to why Bieber may have made the choices he did:x.com
