Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani visited Beirut on Monday to show his support for Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and for the Italian contingent serving in the UNIFIL mission, which has been caught in some of the crossfire of Israel's offensive against Hezbollah in the country.
"I will tell President Aoun, that Italy supports his work, his role for the stability of Lebanon," Tajani said before a meeting at the presidential palace in Beirut.
"We continue to work with our armed forces to train and develop the Lebanese Armed Forces, which represent another element of stability because Lebanon cannot fall under Hezbollah's control.
"Italy has always done its part," added Tajani, expressing "great solidarity with a friend of Italy, President Aoun - closeness and friendship".
He stressed "Italy's active role in building peace in this country, which is fundamental for the stability of the entire Middle East".
