A total of 6,046 motorists were booked for using mobile phones while driving during a special enforcement drive conducted by the Hyderabad Traffic Police between April 3 and April 9.

Of those booked, 5,810 were two-wheeler riders, 51 were three-wheeler drivers, and 185 were drivers of four-wheelers and other vehicles.

Officials said the drive was aimed at curbing the increasing practice of mobile phone usage while driving, which is considered a major cause of road accidents due to distraction. Police noted that such behaviour affects attention, reaction time and judgement, increasing the risk of accidents.

All violators will be produced before the court with charge sheets and penalised as per law.

The Hyderabad Traffic Police said it would continue to carry out such drives regularly, maintaining a zero-tolerance approach towards mobile phone usage while driving, and urged people to follow traffic rules in the interest of road safety.
