Nine persons were awarded life imprisonment for murder in Salem on Thursday (April 9, 2026).
According to the police, Manoj Kumar (25), was a resident of Valluvar Nagar near Annathanapatti. On August 12, 2015, regarding a quarrel that erupted while playing carrom, R. Syed Khadar Basha (35), a resident of Pandal Kaliamman Kovil Street and R. Prakash (34), a resident of Shanmuga Nagar, attacked Manoj. Later, Manoj, along with his brother Vignesh and his friends, went to Maniyanoor, and again a verbal duel broke out between them. Syed and Prakash, along with their accomplices, attacked Manoj. In the attack, Manoj died on the spot.
The Annathanapatti police registered a case and arrested Syed, Prakash, and their accomplices K. Periyasamy (34), P. Kumar (51), C. Maduraj (38), M. Nandhakumar (38), V. Manikandan (50), M. Saravanan (51), and R. Manikandan (42). The case trial was held at the SC/ST Special Court and on Thursday the court found the nine accused guilty and sentenced them to life in prison and also imposed a fine of ₹11,000.
