GURUGRAM:
Hundreds of contractual workers, including women, from around a dozen garments export and automotive companies went on a strike at Industrial Model Township in Manesar here on Wednesday seeking a wage hike after viral videos claimed that the Central government had fixed ₹20,000 as minimum wages.
Prohibitory orders have been imposed by the district authorities in view of the strike. A senior woman police officer said that around 3,000 workers had gathered at the Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation complex and the police reinforcement from neighbouring districts was summoned to maintain law and order.
Later in the day, the Haryana government announced to increase the wages of unskilled workers from ₹11,274.60 to ₹15,220 from April 1. Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini had made the announcement during the Budget Session, but it has not yet been implemented.
Gathered outside the complex, the workers said there were viral videos and news claiming that the government had fixed ₹738 as minimum wages per day and those being paid less should lodge a complaint with the Labour Department.
