Kids don’t just wake up one day, freshly 18 years old and totally prepared for adult responsibilities and a fully autonomous life. The skills that make you functional in a society aren’t just manifested by osmosis — they’re earned through thousands of little moments throughout your childhood.

Recently, a viral post on X had users discussing one parent’s response to one such moment — and, unsurprisingly, they have thoughts.

User @luxemiaa shared (via a screenshot) a partial text conversation between a mother and one of her 13-year-old daughter’s friends, the friend asking if her daughter, Kailee, could go to the movies with her. The mother had posted with the caption, “My daughter is 13 now and has started to ask to go places with her friends. Am I doing too much by not allowing her to go unless I’m there?” she asked with a groaning face emoji. “I hate to be the strict mom.”

Per the screenshot, after getting more details about timing, the mom wrote: “Okay, I’ll see if I’m available to be there. I don’t just drop her off. I have to stay and watch y’all.”

The teen’s friend, for what it’s worth, let the mom know that those conditions weren’t ideal with a brutal response: “It’s ok she doesn’t have to go,” ending the exchange as we see it.
