Tiruchi continues to grapple with persistent traffic congestion, with several key junctions across the city witnessing prolonged hold-ups during peak hours.
Despite periodic interventions by traffic police, commuters face mounting delays, particularly at busy intersections and arterial roads that connect commercial and residential hubs.
Major junctions such as TVS Tollgate, MGR Roundabout, Palpannai, near Melapudur Subway Puthur Four Road, Mannarpuram, and areas around Thillai Nagar, have emerged as chronic bottlenecks where vehicular movement slows to a crawl during morning and evening rush hours. The situation is aggravated by the steady rise in the number of vehicles, coupled with narrow road stretches and inadequate parking regulations in core city areas.
Ongoing infrastructure work, including the construction of the overbridge near the Fort Railway Station and near Railway Junction, have contributed to traffic disruptions with vehicles diverted to already congested roads. Vehicles have to take a detour via the narrow Thennur flyover or the Karur Bypass and both stretches have been facing severe traffic congestion.
In several cases, lack of proper traffic signal coordination and encroachments along key stretches worsen the problem. Drivers are stranded for extended periods. For instance, vehicles are often parked indiscriminately in front of commercial establishments near TVS Tollgate and on the Pudukottai Main Road.
