The suspended senior professor of Anna University, who was arrested in Tirunelveli on Friday, on charges of sexually harassing a female student, was brought to the city and remanded to judicial custody on Saturday after being produced in the court.
On Friday, the All-Women Police Station, Abiramapuram, registered a case against Gnanavel Babu, a senior professor from the Industrial Engineering department, following a complaint by a final-year student alleging sexual harassment. The professor was suspended by the university administration.
The student lodged a complaint on Thursday night at the Commissioner of Police’s office in Vepery, seeking criminal action against the professor. In her complaint, she alleged that the professor subjected her to sustained sexual harassment over the past three years, both in person and through obscene messages sent via mobile phone.
Police traced and apprehended Gnanavel Babu from his relative’s house in Valliyoor near Tirunelveli on Friday night and brought him to Chennai. He was questioned at a police station in connection with the sexual harassment and audio clips revealed by the student.
He was examined at a government hospital on Saturday evening and produced before a magistrate court in Saidapet, where the magistrate ordered him to be lodged at Central Prison, Puzhal prison for 14 days.
