The All Women Police Station at Abiramapuram on Friday (March 27, 2026) arrested a senior professor of Anna University’s Industrial Engineering Department on a complaint of sexual harassment filed by a final-year undergraduate student. The professor has been suspended by the university administration.
The complainant, residing at the university hostel, said the professor, Gnanavel Babu, subjected her to sustained sexual harassment over the past three years, both in person and through obscene messages.
She filed a complaint on Thursday night at the office of Commissioner of Police at Vepery, seeking criminal action against the professor. The complaint was forwarded to the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mylapore. Based on the directive, the All Women Police initiated an inquiry.
Repeated phone calls
In her complaint, the student accused the professor of inappropriate conduct, including repeated phone calls late at night and intrusive conversations. She said the alleged harassment began during her second year and intensified over time, causing her severe mental distress.
