My personal style signifier is jewellery. It’s never just one necklace. It has to be layers and layers of necklaces and earrings and bracelets. For me, the body is a space, and for every digit or orifice, I’m like, “Can I put something on that?” I’ve always liked the idea of being simple and clean, and I appreciate people who can do that, but my real personality is more, more and more.

The last thing I bought and loved was a beautiful Afghani ikat silk coat. I bought it from a dealer I love. I grew up working in the fashion world at Mademoiselle magazine in the late 1970s and early 1980s – everything was “ethnic”. This jacket is probably from the turn of the century – it’s got ikat fabric on the outside and then a beautiful Victorian fabric on the inside. You can wear it inside out, and I love it because it’s oversized – it must have been made for a man. I always learn so much when I’m shopping for vintage – from the fabric, from the fit. With things you buy new, the fit is never that good. You always end up altering them somehow.

A place that means a lot to me is Wyoming, where I grew up. There’s only just over half a million people in the whole state and it’s the 10th largest in the country. It’s gorgeous in its emptiness and so unusual geographically. My soul is definitely there. It’s hard to go in winter because the roads get so crazy, and the winds – up to 70mph and you are holding on for dear life. I visit more during the summer. Besides the politics, it’s heaven. The people are conservative, but they’re funny. Who doesn’t love a cowboy?
