My personal style signifier is more of a sentiment: classic with a bohemian twist. There is a ’70s romance in everything I wear, from vintage slip dresses to flared trousers. If I had to marry myself to one piece, it would be a brown suede fringed jacket I bought at Kensington Market in Toronto when I was in high school. Or a cashmere bandana from Besa, my accessories brand, which I work on alongside making music. I was inspired to start it because whenever I put on a beanie it made everything look too “12-year-old skaterboy”. I wanted something that was warm and a little more sophisticated.

The last thing I bought and loved was a tiny chocolate brown Hermès bag from the ’60s. I bought it off one of those old-lady auction sites. I recently had my second baby; the practicality of motherhood means normally having to carry a giant diaper bag around. This bag makes me feel put together when I get to go out by myself.

The place that means a lot to me is Woodstock in upstate New York, where I live part-time. I first came here when I was 19. There was a band that was big in the ’70s called The Band, and the drummer was a Woodstock resident. He played in Bob Dylan’s backup band – Bob has lived here on and off for many years – and used to hold concerts in his barn. Some friends dragged me to see one – it was wonderful. When I was in my late 20s, my brothers and I got a little cabin up here, and it’s where my boyfriend and I spent our first weekend together. He is from Los Angeles and had never been upstate. Like me, he totally fell in love with the area; it’s where we bought our first place together and, now, where we are working on our second renovation project, which is nearly complete.
