The American fashion designer, beloved for her signature rock ‘n’ roll style, reveals her favourite things from hotels to style icons
Known for her boho-chic aesthetic and love for vintage fashion, Anna Sui is a New York icon. The Detroit native has called the city home since the 1970s, when she studied at Parsons School of Design and met one of her long-time friends, photographer Steven Meisel. Sui established her eponymous label in 1981, eventually expanding into beauty and fragrance.
This month, the designer is releasing a book, The Nineties x Anna Sui, paying homage to that pivotal decade in her career. Here, she shares her favourite finds from Manhattan and beyond.
My all-time favourite films are Priest of Love, The Night, Juliet of the Spirits, The Damned, The Leopard and Performance. England’s Dreaming, Please Kill Me, Mabel Dodge Luhan: New Woman, When Women Ran Fifth Avenue: Glamour and Power at the Dawn of American Fashion are some of my favourite books. I’m currently reading New Worlds and The Life of an Outsider.
I follow antique fabric stores @tinseltrading and @starchedandcrumpled, vintage dealers @fd_gallery and @josephsaidianandsons, and @rg_bunny2 and @weirdtvland.
