A Mahila Court has sentenced a dismissed police constable to imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life for raping a 16-year-old girl.

The accused made a false promise to marry her and later coerced her to abort her foetus, abetting her to end her life in 2020.

According to the prosecution, on November, 22, 2020, the mother of the victim lodged a complaint stating that her minor daughter was in a relationship with Magesh, 27, the police constable. As the complainant and her son had not accepted this relationship, her daughter ended her life. Consequently, M.K.B. Nagar Police registered an FIR for unnatural death.

Pursuant to the directions of the Madras High Court dated March 8, 2021, following a petition filed by the complainant who alleged foul play in the death, the investigation was transferred by then Director General of Police to the Crime Branch CID (CB-CID). The Anti-Trafficking Cell, CB-CID, re-registered the case and took up investigation.

At the conclusion of the trial, Mahila Court Judge G. Prabakaran pronounced the judgment convicting the dismissed constable Magesh and awarded rigorous life imprisonment for offence under Section 6 (Aggravated Penetrative Sexual Assault) of the POCSO Act which shall mean imprisonment for the remainder of his natural life. The Judge also sentenced him to undergo another life imprisonment for abetment of suicide.
