Southern Railway is all set to introduce regular train services daily on the Karaikal - Peralam broad gauge section which falls under the limits of the Tiruchi Railway Division. An express and two passenger trains are to be operated every day on this stretch via Tirunallar from next month.

The Railway Board has approved the rerouting of the Tambaram - Karaikal - Tambaram express (Train No. 16175/16176) via Peralam - Karaikal section with extension up to Velankanni with effect from May 20. The trains will halt at Peralam Junction, Tirunallar, Karaikal, Nagore and Nagapattinam Junction in both directions.

The Velankanni - Mayiladuthurai - Velankanni daily passenger trains (Train No. 56008/56007) will be introduced via Karaikal - Peralam section from May 20. Similarly, the Mayiladuthurai - Karaikal - Mayiladuthurai daily passenger trains (Train No. 56009/ 56010) will be introduced with effect from May 20.

The Southern Railway announcement has gladdened rail travellers of the region who had been consistently demanding the railway administratration to introduce regular train services on this section following the “authorisation” issued by the Commissioner of Railway Safety, Southern Circle, Bengaluru in May last year. The need to introduce regular train services on this section was also raised by some Members of Parliament.
