The Centre on Friday (March 13, 2026) introduced a Bill to amend the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019, which takes away transgender people’s “right to self-perceived gender identity” and alters the definition of a “transgender person”.

The move drew condemnation from the community and activists told The Hindu that the proposed amendments are in variance of the landmark 2014 NALSA judgment, which recognised transgender identity, and will take away “the right of bodily autonomy”.

Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment, Virendra Kumar, introduced the Bill.
