A shooter was reported at a synagogue with a preschool in the heart of the Detroit metro area’s Jewish community on Thursday.

Law enforcement confirmed to multiple media outlets that the incident involved an active shooter and a car driven into the building at Temple Israel in West Bloomfield, Michigan.

Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard said security engaged an individual in gunfire at the synagogue. There are no confirmed injuries and police do not yet have anyone in custody, he added, noting that “it’s a big facility with a lot of land around it.” He confirmed that a vehicle was involved in the incident.

The preschoolers at the temple have been moved out, he added.

Authorities are working to determine whether more than one person was involved in the incident, Bouchard said, adding that “Jewish facilities in the area are going to have a lot of extra presence.”
