An army soldier, M. Ranjith, 25, assaulted his neighbour, P. Selvam, 47, with an iron rod, inflicting bleeding injuries on his head, near Peraiyur on Saturday night.
Mr. Selvam, who had three sutures on his head, is undergoing treatment at Government Virudhunagar Medical College Hospital.
Police said Ranjith, who was posted in Rajasthan, had come home in Guruvappanaickenpatti near Peraiyur on leave.
On Saturday, he picked a quarrel with one Narayanan, questioning him over speeding of motorbike in the locality.
When they were quarrelling, Mr. Selvam, Narayanan’s relative, tried to pacify them. Angered over this, Ranjith assaulted him with an iron rod on his head, causing bleeding injuries.
